I always send a thank you email after. No one replies to it, heck I don't even know if they read it but it only takes a minute or two to write. Letters are for dinosaurs. A decision will have already been made before they receive it.
I got into my college due to my follow up letter. The interviewer saw me during orientation and told me I was the only one who sent a follow up letter, so she accepted me over people with better grades.
I have never written a thank you note for an interview. I have written thank yous for those who responded to let me know the position had been filled however.
Writing thank you notes for interviews seems to be a new thing. I took courses on job hunting when I got my degree, still have the books, and NONE of them mentions thank you notes. Later on, when interviewing for positions, I sometimes got follow up calls, but never a thank you note.
I do write thank yous for gift received however. I don't get many though from people younger than myself.
