I work at OfficeMax and its almost required to have a resume with you. Interviews are fairly extensive and I am shocked at the high standards my manager has for a low-paying retail job.
Since when did these sweat factories start thinking of themselves as so highly that they are making the process of getting a job so tough. They wonder why no one wants to work and why we're always short on staff and have such high employee turnover.
To be fair, OfficeMax caters to small business owners and admins. So I would expect them to have a higher standard than, say, Toys R Us.
i would think that an employer seeing an application submitted online would say "this guy's lazy". Whereas seeing an application submitted in person would make the employer say "wow this guy actually made an effort to come down here! I want to talk to this guy"
On the contrary, it would more than likely make them say "wow this guy needs to get with the times."
These places preferred to see resumes twenty years ago when I was applying to them for part-time high school and college work. It's hardly a new thing.
You all misunderstand me. Ill make it as basic as I can.
Previously: Professional jobs = Resume. Non-professional jobs: Application
Currently: Professional jobs = Resume. Non-professional jobs: Resume
When did all of the non-professional places out there start thinking they were on par with the professional jobs and begin demanding a resume? Im sorry but to me thats kind of like demanding a grill cook wear a suit and tie. It just doesnt go with the job.

sorry but i refuse to become a so lazy that i cant even walk or drive 5 blocks down the road to apply for a job. I will not become THAT GUY that lives across the street from his job but cant come in because he couldnt get a ride.

It has nothing to do with being lazy; it has everything to do with following the employers instructions. If you have a problem with this, don't apply. I'm sure they will have no shortage of other applicants who do follow directions to chose from.

I really do understand where you are coming from, BUT the question has no quick and simple answer. It's something that has evolved over a period of years. I never had to have a resume until I had graduated college with something to actually put on it.
I often ask these kinds of questions, too, which seemingly have no answer that sounds satisfying...
