I finally tracked down the director of the non-profit where I volunteered/worked and they have offered to write a letter of reference for my files. They still refuse to verify over the phone anything regarding the now closed organization (long story).
How will employers view this, if at all?
I was there for 7 years so that is a big chunk of my recent past.
It's closed. Say you are no longer in touch with the director but have these previous references available. Most HR people should be okay with this. Do you have co-workers from the company that could recommend you as a co-worker?
The reference letter will go a long ways over having squat. Odds are the person is going to write a simple you were a good co-worker and enjoyed working with you type letter as they probably can;t speak on dehalf of the defunct operation.
A closed company isn't the end of the world so long as you can show something to verify some of the info. A reference letter, a copy of a pay stub, even a news article about the organization adds credibility over nothing. You might have to build a mini-portfolio for the closed company
so you have something to support your explination.
There were only 4 people employed or steady volunteers with the organization. I could have a letter of reference from the director. One of the volunteers was a relative of mine (relatives don't act as references) and the other has left the state. I last worked/volunteered there in March 2011 (when it closed) and had been there since Feb 2004. I was on the payroll for some of the time (when she felt like it) and was a volunteer the rest of the time. She has since let the business license lapse, website has been taken down, and essentially she want's nothing to do with the organization or the people who worked/volunteered there.
More recently I was a volunteer at the local elementary school for 3 years (2008-2012) but the teachers are unable to provide formal references (district policy) but are willing to write personal letters of recommendation if I ask.
