They can ask for the moon but unless they put a gun to your head, you ain't got to give it to them! Any employer who has the b*lls to ask for any password - I don't care if it's your dog's Facebook - is probably going to ask you to sleep with him/her or some other ridiculous thing once you begin working for that employer. They are certainly capable of pushing the envelope a lot further, in that case.

I say, employer, go jump in a lake...."take that job and shove it. "

That's how they can get in. All they need do is find out who your IP is in your area and go to that Company to get your e-mail address. Having that will get them to all sites you join under your email address. They don't need to rely on just you to get in. I don't like that they have full protectection and people can't take them to court and sue for violation of right to privacy. Also they can use the media to do it too. It is being claimed that craz people who intend on doing harm to their fellow employees and employers usually go on some social website to tell all their friends or at least hint to them what their intentions are or to make threats that could be either just in jest or real. The problem with that for the employer is if an employer misses a clue that such and such employee, though rare compared to the majority of employees, does put in writing what their intentions are and that employee misses it after having access to such info., then that employer should be held responsible. This is where the problem is with protecting the employer from any lawsuits/responsibility. I'm sure the media and quite a few lawyers will squash such a law and find loopholes to make the employers responsible but still it does need to be stopped.

The term Background check now needs to be redefined. It should be limited to Police/criminal convictions Background only.

Mining a job applicant’s social networking sites can pose a legal liability for employers, especially when it comes to bias in hiring. Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and the rest, often provide a picture of a job seeker, including race, religion, disability, etc., and if a hiring manager decides not to offer someone a job after perusing such sites they could face charges of discrimination.

I'm sure they want to check the social media websites before hiring to make a final decision but it does make them vulnerable to lawsuits. Even if they ask after hiring they can still fire that employee before they become permanent. I wonder if they are looking into present employees who have been working for/with them for years I could see checking into sites they go into at work but not at their homes. That's creepy.

ugh, Do we not get to be our true-selves anywhere? So I am sopposed to only post PC things on MY profile because some recruiter is nosey? I have to come to work and keep a straight face and be polite, but my off time is just that MY off time. I post about alot of political hot-buttoned issues on my page, so if the recruiter is a die-hard Republican, I may not get the job. Lovely.

I have a very common name, my account is locked down private, I don't have my picture for my profile pic and for city I have "Los Angeles," not the suburb I live in. But no way would I ever let any employer in either via password or friend request. I can't say any job is that important. No co-workers friended on Facebook either.

I don't use my ISP's email. But I have several email addresses.

How can you get an email address or even go online without an IP address. Don't you need access to the internet which means you need an Internet Provider? Unless you are cutting in on someone elses.

My ISP is Time Warner ... I have an email account through them which I don't use. My email account is through a former ISP when I was using dial up and it is THAT email address that is affiliated with my Facebook account.

I think all your employer would need to do is get access through Time Warner and if they can figure out, which they might be able to through Time Warner, who your dial up ISP is then they can check through that one too. See we all have to have an email address in order to register anywhere online today. So the best and easiest way for the employer or really anyone would be through your ISP. Just having your name, address and ISP would be enough and if they get away with using "background checks" for employment they can gain access to all email addresses including the guests and all accounts linked to that ISP's customer.

As far as I know our ISP knows every single site we go into even when not registered. Google, for example, keeps track as do all other sites like Google, of what questions we ask. What I am not sure of is if they can gain access to the passwords. But like I said if they can use the "background check" they might be able to legally. It's really sick that any employer or potential employer would want to have access like that. It's not bad enough they tap us on the phone at work no they have to do this too. I bet and sometimes suspect my own even has us on hidden cameras and I don't mean the dome cams that everyone knows and assumes is working.

If ever asked for a password, refuse to give it to them. Politely remind them that it's against Facebook's terms of service for requesting a password, and giving them away. Should they not believe you, pull up Facebook's terms of service and show them.

Make up a fake profile for job interviews. Make it dull and boring. That's the one they'd get. They have no business in your personal life.

These companies are ridiculous.
I agree. This is utterly outrageous!

I believe this is the best approach by anyone not bothered by the practice.
