I decided to say what the hell today and complete two online applications for a local college and Comcast and when I came to the end I was asked to provide 3 references. I immediately stopped the application because there is no way you will have the numbers of my references and you haven't even met me yet. I swear companies are getting more and more WEIRD each year.

Unless I;m on a job interview and asked for a list of my references then that's the only way I will provide that information. So I guess I will never be a Comcast employee

It's just part of the basic application they keep on file. It doesn't mean they're going to call them until they're about to offer you a job. Have you never applied for a job before? That attitude won't help you in your job search. Again, just because you have to provide references doesn't mean they're going to immediately call them. They wouldn't waste their time one someone they haven't even met, like you said.

And unless I'm called in for a interview they don't need it. I'm not going to have my references information on multiple online applications and I'm not being called to come in for a interview.

I prefer to provide a list of my references in someone's hand not on the internet

I understand, I just don't agree. I don't mind handing over references for a job I find online if I think it's a great job. I know they won't be contacted until necessary, and it's likely just an online version of their paper application that request references for their files, so I don't see the difference. But to each their own, and I just hope you're not missing out on a great opportunity simply because of this one issue.

Well I just applied to a great job on the website of University of Pennsylvania and there was no questions about a list of references. Which confirms the Comcast organization is a JOKE

I completely agree with you! It's not a reasonable request, and it does seem to breach good sense. Stand your ground on that one~

The more professional the job, the less likely this will be an issue. These questions regarding references should and will surface during an interview. Think about it people- if 100 folks apply for a job online and list references, that's about 500 names of people not involved just "out there." It is a step that normally comes later in the process.
