Hello users,

I was recently offered a job by a top seattle area tech company an entry level tech position. The problem is that I lied about the duration of employment with a company. I worked for them for 1.5 years but I lied that I worked for them for 2 years. I am an legal immigrant student, I worked for this company in asia 3 years back

My potential employer is contracted with a 3rd party staffing firm who will be doing the background check on me, so I am wondering If I will get the job or not.

I am sorry for lying, but I padded my resume for other companies and not this one, but I forgot to remove it.

I am afraid I will be denied the job after the check, what do you think?.

most 3rd party staffing firm will call your previous employers to confirm that you in fact worked there. mostly that they will ask duration too. They will also do a background check, credit report, criminal check on you too. who is doing the background check on you?
I remember a company calls Correct Checks, contacted all my previous employers and ask alot of questions. I know because one of my boss call me and let me know. lol

The good thing is most employers don't really remember or don't care. they will just answer "yes" to most questions.

IF they found out that you lied, you will most likely not getting the job.

I have gone through a few background checks before.

Generally it is a 3rd party company that does them. At least for grad school, Kroll was the main one.

They usually just call each company to verify that you did work there. They may also verify the duration as well as your title and pay. But anything on your resume is fair game.

Obviously you shouldn't lie or pad your resume like that. Your few months that you embellished probably didn't help you get this job anyway and now you are worried, have sleepless nights, stressed, etc.

But with that said, you should be fine.

RVD.

Did you say "Two Years" or did you put a specific start date that was prior to when you actually started?

It was 3 yrs ago. It is very easy to forget the exact dates you worked for a company. If they ask, just let them know you were unsure since it has been several years since you worked for them.

Did you lie on the job application or just your resume? It's what's on the application they'll typically check. If they question you about the discrepancy, you can just tell them it was a mistake on the resume.
