I am hiring for an assistant soon and while I do not require them to have a completed college degree, I would like to see they have "some college" to include in their experience. If a candidate mails me their resume, with dates indicating a college enrollment for general course work, can I verify the time frame in which they were enrolled with that college? Again, I am not hiring people with a degree necessarily...only with "some college" and I would just like to verify their enrollment dates or how many completed credits they have.
I know I can ask for a transcripts, is there another way to verify by calling the institution or using a background check service?
Thanks so much for any input!

Most universities have a degree checker that allows you to put the information into a computer database and it will come back with when they were enrolled, etc. That may help, but you would have to do it on a school by school basis. The other thing that may work is to tell them that with your application, or upon hire, you need some proof of attendance. College students have class schedules, etc that they can print out online. But not sure how that would fly. I know if an employer asked to see my college info and it wasn't to verify availability for scheduling, I would have quit on the spot. It is sort of like saying you think they lied about their experience. At least I would take it that way.

Also, be careful with "verify the time frame" as depending upon the age of an applicant, that can start to look like you are illegally trying to determine their age...which if they are over 40 could result in a lawsuit against you for discrimination.

Very good advice.

I definitely think education is important, however, I don't think everyone needs college. Is there any reason why you want your employee to have some college credits? Obviously it's your preference, I just want to know the reason why if you don't mind.
