It's been times when I was so nervous I forgot to ask for the business card

yeah, i forgot to ask one at the interview before my most recent interview, which was at a movie theater, my interview there was on June 14th, and the main-manager who interviewed me said he would be calling everyone he interviewed, but he never called me, and i made my share of follow-up phone calls, like twice a week for 3 weeks after my interview but he was never available, and either the assistant manager or a different manager would answer, and he/she said they would leave him a message, they told me they would let him know more than once, and i still never got a response, not even a thank-you for your interest in us e-mail

I am surprised you still do biz cards in USA, in Europe i noticed they all stopped slowly using them 5-6 years ago.

I once asked one manager why he didn't have a biz card, his response was "If there is something we cut we do it and biz cards costs to much for all employees to have today"

I suspect they are mostly a formality in the US these days, although it does give you a copy of the person's contact info which you can enter electronicaly at your leisure vs. fiddling with a smartphone while talking to the person.

Oh, and they are useful in the defense industry since one is often not allowed to bring personal electronics, such as cell phones or laptops, into secure areas. So, you can still get a business card, take it with you, and enter the data later once you can use your phone.

Yeah sorry but that advice is not a cure for every single person, I don't have $5000 that I can just throw away (actually to be honest I do not have $5000 period) I am working part time. Most businesses fail within the first year, or do not turn a actual profit for several years so what will I do in the meantime to get money? The money fairy stopped visiting my house when my position was eliminated.
Last time I checked you don't earn a big paycheck from selling Amway, Mary Kay or Tupperware.

I think anyone who gives the unemployed the "start your business" advice should be banned

It also speaks volumes regarding the quality of one's character when they refer to something they dislike as being retarded
