If you mean purposely sabotaging projects out of spite, that's different from talking about how big of a meanie said boss is but still doing sufficient work.

However, "talking behind the boss' back" as one called it would refer to the latter, not the former.
Because those negative pieces of gossip can get outside the workplace and into meetings with vendors, customers, competitors. It can create a whole heap of problems.

I would suggest that you find someone to coach you in interviewing. A neighbor who owns a business or manages one or maybe a religious leader. Often your local career center/unemployment office will have people who you can make an appointment with to work on your resume and interview skills with--all free of charge.

I doubt it.

That would in effect cost them their job, so I know they wouldn't do that, it wouldn't make any sense.

I meant talking about the boss behind their back to other co-workers (co-workers do this all the time believe it or not, even I did, get over it) or to family and friends.

Not necessarily.

What creates a toxic work place is intolerant people like yourself who can't accept that people may be different from your small world view of how they should be.

Because sometimes people do stupid things that don't make sense.

I agree.

But what does that have to do with simply hiring a person who gets the job done?

Everyone does stupid things, sometimes subconsciously and sometimes consciously.
