It's in poor taste. They can get away with it because they have jobs. Like the saying goes, you don't know what you have until you lose it. If they had to choose between interviewing scores of candidates and being unemployed, I think they'd select the former.

I don't like wishing harm on others or bad luck, but sometimes I wish employers would lose their jobs for a year with no income and see how they felt to go through this. I've interviewed with some who tried to appear understanding, but they still had no clue how hard it is out there.
