Perhaps I misunderstood...is this a ONE day thing or all week? My answer to you was for an all week thing.

If it's one day, just call in and say you are not going to make it that day. You don't even have to say you are sick.

If it's an all week thing, I stand by my first answer.

It is just one day, for like half an hour they want me to come in and observe. I just feel like I can't call in because that is something that drives me nuts when co-workers do, and I said that in the interview too!!! But I obviously want to show I'm interested in the other place, as that is a job for which I just received my bachelor degree!

I sympathize with you not wanting to lie.
It's a great trait!
BUT in this economy - every man for himself.. it's a matter of survival!

Why can't you tell them you have a doctor appointment so that you won't miss the whole day?
Tell them you have to see a specialist, hold your stomach when you say it, and they'll assume you're seeing a doctor and you won't be lying?

I would bet that most of the co-workers calling in are not calling in for other job opportunities. Some of them are legitimately sick while others are hung over, don't feel like it, want to go to some show or concert or whatever that will take a few hours to get to, on and on.

Look, if you want this job you interviewed for, just call in. As I said, you don't have to lie and say you are sick, just tell them you won't be able to make it in that day. It's not a lie.

You sound like me. I feel guilty and dread calling in even when I'm deathly ill. I always thought an employer can't ask your reason for not coming in. I would give as little info as possible. I wouldn't let this job opportunity pass you by.
