i doubt they will care about the small gap since you have been gainfully employed for 3+ years now

Why not just tell the TRUTH and let them know you were searching for employment for that five months? The more jobs you've had in that short period of time, the more you look unstable. If you only lasted five months at a make-believe company, 13 months at another, and so on, you will more than likely not stay at the new place long, either.

Lying rarely gets you ahead for very long.

Sure, until the guy who knew you at company B walks into your office to fix the photocopier and opens his mouth along with Pandora's Box. It's a small world that gets smaller by the day.
