Here is my situation. I graduated college in 2005 with an Accounting degree. I was at my first job at a CPA firm from January, 2006 to May, 2007. Then I made the move from public accounting to private industry. I was at that company from May, 2007 to November, 2008, when the company went out of business. I was out of work for 5 months, and then I got my next job in April, 2009, and have been with this company since then. A few months ago, my position in the finance department was eliminated and the company offered me another position in the Sales Operations department, doing something different. I moved about 4 months ago, and I am not happy there. I want to do accounting. I know the job market is tough, but I worry that if I wait a few years for the job market to improve, I won't be able to find another accounting job if my life depends on it. So I think the best thing is to look now. My only problem is references. All my professional references are at my current company. I know I will get good references. That isn't an issue. The issue is they don't know I am looking, andd in this economy, I certainly don't want to jeapordize my current job. Is it reasonable to ask a prospective employer to not check my references until they are sure they want to hire me, or maybe make me an offer contingent on satisfactory reference checks, and wait until I give notice to call?
You can stipulate that with the current employer, etc.
However, in the company I work for, if you do not have any references to call, you are not getting an offer. So, we would need someone that we could talk to...even if it was not from the current job.
Hmm, no. Why would you want to use your current employer as reference anyway?
Read the post. His employers aren't unhappy with him and he's confident that they'll give him a good reference. He'd just rather not let them know he's looking for something else until the time is right and he's close to a firm offer from another company.

I am not sure about you, in my case, I don't want to be fired before I have a firm offer in my hand.
