if you had a phone interview scheduled with a company that was located in the area you want to relocate to BUT the pay is 20% lower than what you are making now would you still go through with the interview? If the interview went well and you were offered the position would you still negotiate for a higher salary even though prior to the interview HR (the person who set up the interview - not sure of their position within the company) said the pay is X? Basically the company has already said prior to even scheduling the interview we're only paying x for this position but my thinking is if it were to get the point where there was a job offer (I know, I know i'm jumping the gun here) what is the harm in trying to negotiate a better salary.

It's a phone interview, costing you nothing. Go for it and then see if they offer you the job. At that point maybe you can negotiate.

It also depends on the cost of living where this job would be located. I know where I live cost of living is higher, therefore salaries are higher. We looked into moving south, where cost of living is much less--- therefore.... salaries are lower.

It all depends on that and whether or not you could live on the given salary they will offer.

Check out the Chamber of Commerce website of the location you want to go to... they usually have cost of living calculations.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

For myself, I would take the 20% cut in pay to live where I wanted to live. I am looking to move back to TN in the near future and am willing to take a slight pay cut. I guess it depends on how back you want to live in that area. I would be up front about the pay though.

hi everyone. thanks for the responses. phone interview is scheduled. we'll see what happens (it's dh's interview).

My biggest concern is i know i'm going to take pay cut so while for one of us it's okay but both of us getting hit with pay cuts, ouch.... it's gonna hurt. we're planning to move south as well xfountaingrl.

if we both have to take pay cuts then it really doesn't matter if the cost of living is less, we'd still struggle. Yes the cost of housing is lower but the cost of groceries will most likely be the same, cost of gas will be the same, home owner's insurance will be less but we'll have to purchase flood insurance which we don't have now because it's not necessary.

The harm is that MOST companies have a predetermined rate for a specific job category.....If I'm offering $12.00 per hour and you demand $16.00 per hour.....the discussion is over.

it does depend on the company and the benefits (but it's too early in the process to talk about benefits). I have in the past negotiated a higher salary for myself when I was told the pay is only x. (of course i've only ever worked for small (30 people or less) companies where IMO it's easier to negotiate a better deal than with a big company).

FYI, if the position was only offering $12.00/hour the ad would not be answered (by me).

was jusing that as an example......and naturally....if youre interviewing for an executive level or upper management job...the process is different.....and the rules are diffenent.

If one of you will have health insurance, there might be some wiggle room for the other's salary to be a bit higher, without insurance. Also, if moving to a state with no state income tax from a state with the tax, that would be a savings.

I dont think it's too early in the process to discuss benefits. Your benefits really are part of your salary package.
If it's a 20% cut in pay but they provide better benefits, it could be even up.

Now if it's a 20% cut in pay and less benefits it could cost you even more.

I took a paycut once but they paid for my health insurance. I ended up better in the long run.

Good luck!
