For example, one works in event planning and manages a creative team. And sometimes they would have to improvise if things dont go as planned. I would think it shows quick thinking, which looks like a strength. But if things they planned didnt go as planned maybe that would look like a weakness? Like they would have to explain why didnt it go as planned, and how often things dont go as planned? Or maybe thats just the nature of the business and they would get a pass?

What do you think?

I don't think I would use the word "improvise" as, just as you pointed out, it has negative connotations. I would stress that you were able to meet the demands of changing needs and deadlines, or something along those lines.

Definitely negative. Say things like creative solutions, time management skills, and flexible.

The word 'improvise' implies something has gone wrong but you have a temporary solution. I think it is good word in real time but steer clear of the resume...play it safe. Hemlock has good substitutions.
