I'm curious what drug tests are looking for? Are they just looking for illegal drugs or do they test for medications as well?

I have a test soon. I'm clear of illegal drugs but I am taking Prevacid (for heartburn). I prefer not to mention the issue encase they think I'm unfit or something silly just because of heartburn. But could the Prevacid show up in the test?

prevacid will not be a problem. workplace drug screens only test for drugs prohibited by law. there are some narcotics that they test for that you could have a prescription for (and in that case you would just show you had a prescription and you'd be ok), but they are not going to test for heartburn medicine.

With the exception of weed, most of the substances they test for are out of your urine inside of 24-72 hours. Most Rx drugs to the best of my knowledge (some pain killers being a likely exception) should not show as anything.

Also, despite the disingenuous claims of drug test makers, they do report false positives. Certain anti-biotics and even ibuprofen have been linked to false positives. Best advice, don't take ANYTHING 48 hours before the test.

We even test for for nicoteen, Smoking is prohibited here. By 2014 all hospitals in California will have the same requirement. We are not allowed to use any tobaco product.

my dad tested positive for opiates on a drug test because he had eaten poppyseed cake (coffee cake with dense poppyseed filling) the day before. the people who were giving the test said some little old ladies who got the same cake at the same bakery had the same problem! it was not held against him, but he is a super square middle aged man. and they may have made him retest, i'm not sure.

One time I had to take an employment urine drug test while I was being prescribed hydroocodone and taking it everyday. For some reason, it did not show up on the results. Or at least the employer never asked me about it. Which seemed weird.

But yeah, they are not going to test for prescription drugs that are not scheduled, like heartburn medication.

This is why you log any OTCs in the last 24-72 hours and bring a list of your medications that you are prescribed. If you have nothing to hide, it shouldn't be a problem. This is what I'll do.
