We contact references on the top three candidates. A reference check does not mean you will get a job offer, it means you are being considered for the position. Universities tend to move SLOW and 3 days is nowhere near enough time for a job offer.

For this position, they shortlisted like hell - no phone screening, only one 30 min (mine went over to 40 mins) interview. And I interviewed with the director of the program. Do you think they're still going to call multiple candidates' references?

Thanks, everyone, for the advice. Definitely not going to make contact now, but the waiting is driving me up the wall!

Is it possible that they checked my references but don't plan on hiring me? Why is this taking so long? Should I email them again?

Budget may not have been approved yet for the position
Offer letter maybe in the process of being put together

I would send a email at 9am on Monday to find out the status

This is a relatively small nonprofit (granted within a larger university), so I figure that if they like me, and my references check out (which they should), then I should've received an offer a day or so after.

Mostly, I'm just anxious and sick of the job hunt and would like some peace of mind. I feel like I'm so close with getting an offer from this place and the more time passes, the more I feel it slipping away.

Did all of your references know they were being contacted ahead of time?

Did you use any previous supervisors as a reference?

Yes and all of my references were previous supervisors. We're all on good terms, and the reason I found out my references were getting checked was because one of my former supervisors called me very excited about the news.

I don't know how they do things but, speaking from my experience, multiple people were interviewed and the references of the best candidates will be contacted.

I would not ask for status. Just wait. The most I would do is send a thank you email reiterating your interest

Could it be possible that we interviewed for the same job? Your circumstances sounds eerily similar to mine. Unfortunately for me, I didn't get the job. The Director who will supervise the position (and was part of the interview panel) personally called me to give me the news. He was polite, gracious and thoughtful and I very much appreciated the courtesy. While I'm incredibly disappointed, I do believe whomever gets to work with him will be very fortunate.

Nonetheless, whether or not we interviewed for the same position: good luck!

They called you to let you know you didn't get the job? To me that is so unnecessary

I am another university guy. Everything Joe from Dayton says is exactly correct.

After the committee interviews all of the candidates they have to meet and decide on a ranking.

HR checks references on the top 1-3.

After reference checks, another meeting. If anything bad is turned up, it may need to get bumped up a level for an advisory opinion.

Somewhere in there a criminal background check is run.

Back to HR to decide on a start date.

Now the candidate can be called.

All of these meetings may take a week or more to schedule, so you really do need to be patient.
