Networking seems to be hyped up a bit not that it's not a good way to find employment but my last 2 jobs have come from seeing the job posted online and applying.

I had put my partial resume on dice.com. The recruiter called me and begged me to finish it. I threw one together and sent it with the understanding that it wasn't pretty but displayed the facts. I got a phone interview, 3 weeks later another phone interview, the next week another phone interview and the last one they flew me down to SC. It was a long process.

Both jobs were found after applying online. Both were long shots... the companies didn't know a thing about me and I didn't have a lot of experience.

Same with my previous job.

A complete stranger referred you to the hiring manager?

A former coworker found out I was laid off and encouraged me to apply at his new company. With the help of his glowing recommendation I got the job.

(This position was in the so-called hidden job market. The company never advertised the position to outsiders. I just happened to have exactly the right skills and experience the company needed so they created the job opening just for me.)

Applied online through the company website after viewing the job posting on indeed.com. Was contacted for an interview two days after submitting my application.
