Just curious who the unofficials would be. I mean, who'd they go out of their way to find?
Either way, I'm not worried.

I like it when employers tell me when they're checking references, so I can tell my references to expect a call in the near future. But I've never had them ask- as other people have said, giving them the list of references implies permission to contact those people.

My current job didn't check my references but my new one checked almost every single one (they skipped one for some reason) and also asked if I could give a non supervisor reference for my current job since my company has a no reference policy.

I think you'd find this happening more often with a local job search, say if the hiring manager knows someone at one of your previous employers. Or if the application asks for manager contact info but doesn't ask whether it's OK to contact those people. I don't think hiring managers are doing a whole bunch of sleuthing to find references.

Thanks everyone.

I just found it odd that the company that seems sooooo close to making an offer hasn't checked references. Maybe they will, maybe they won't. Oh well. All my references know to expect a call at anytime, however, I agree, it would be nice if the company forewarned me, so my people don't ignore them. LOL.

I will wait patiently. I guess since I have to pack, I'll be distracted.

I wonder what they do when the previous employer won't give references? My former employer requires all employers (and landlords, and anyone else checking references) to go on a special website to check references, where they ONLY give the time frame of employment. You cannot call them, you cannot email them. You can only go on their website and enter codes to find out this information. My landlord couldn't figure it out, it was so complicated.

They can and will fire anyone who they find out actually gives a personal reference, although with everyone having cell phones now some people sneak around this rule.

This is becoming more and more common, I think for legal reasons (repercussions of giving a bad reference, etc.)

yeah, as i mentioned before, my company has a no reference policy. it's really infuriating. and i do think it's fairly common, especially with larger companies. i don't know how strictly it's enforced but my managers abide by it.

my new manager was able to call my current manager to verify that the policy exists, but all my manager was able to do was confirm that and refer her to the website. i also provided performance reviews in lieu of references, and i'm holding onto those.

it really bugs me that i put in 3 years at this place, did a great job, i hear all the time about how they don't know what they'll do without me.... and i've got nothing to show for that. just a 3 year hole in my reference history that makes prospective employers suspicious. if i didn't have a conscience i'd just be blowing off these last few weeks at work instead of making sure everything's organized and clear for the next person. cause really, what's the point? i'm not getting anything out of all this work except the satisfaction that i'm not screwing my managers and coworkers over.

i was able to get a reference from a coworker; i don't think our company policy covers anyone but supervisors. in any case she did it on her cell phone and on her own time outside of the office.
