Yeah, it's been going on for years as per ''company policy'' otherwise known as ''CYA''.

And yeah, all your good work means nothing, officially.

''Back door'' references might get you help or get you ''black balled''.

I've been using the same 3 people as references for over 15 years. We are all still friends and ex-coworkers from a common employer from those years.

Otherwise I've got no references as companies don't give them out anymore.

Everybody knows this as standard practice and does not expect anything else.

Not sure why this policy is necessary. Wouldn't it be more prudent to have anyone who wants a reference to just sign a no lawsuit agreement of some sort ?

That would last right up until someone filed a lawsuit despite signing the agreement.

Not giving references is a much more certain way for companies to cover themselves.

Yep, this is the case because you may have that boss who doesn't settle and is a hot head. We have all had that boss at some point. So perhaps rather than the one boss who hates you, they rather not officially say anything.

Doing so at my company is a violation of company policy that can get the hiring manager in a lot of hot water.
