Hello all,
I had an interview yesterday and I had a few standard questions asked and a couple I have never been asked. I was applying for a casino dealer position. I will type the questions and some of my responses below. How would you all recommend to reply to these questions and what is an interviewer looking for when asking these?

Which is more important, people skills or technical skills?
While both are important I would say people skills b/c technical skills can be taught whereas people skills are more ingrained into someone's genetic personality.

Where do you see yourself in five years?
I'm currently in college to become a math teacher so I see myself graduated and if the opportunity is presented I could grow to a position of more responsibility in this company or be in a position as a teacher with the local school district.

Why do you want to work for this company?
Made up some things about how I had friends who worked for the company and they said it was a good one to work for.

What separates you from our other canidates?

Some answers tend to vary with the career. For example, I'd rather have an engineer with technical skills vs. a guy who's a big talker... which one will design something that meets the requirements. On the flip side, a sales person really needs people skills in addition to whatever technical skills they may have.

For a casino dealer, it's a tough call: If it's not your job to draw interest or gamers to the table, than you don't need as much in the way of people skills - you just keep quiet and handle the cards. Technical skills are very important there - nobody is going to want to play at a table where the dealer makes mistakes, flips cards by accident, etc.

The "where do you see yourself in 5 years" question is such a waste of time. Everyone is going to answer it with some variation of "contributing even more to your organization." I don't know if they actually get people who respond with things like, "retired on a beach," or "in your job," or "working someplace that pays better," but it's a silly question and you gave the correct stock answer.

Why do you want to work for the company? That's tough when comparing companies that basially do the same thing - you can't really mention any unique products or services the place offers since, like all casinos, it basically offers the same type of stuff. Mentioning how others enjoyed working there was a good tactic, IMHO.

What separates you from other candidates? I'd recommend talking about whatever skills you have that are unusual or exceptional - there's no way to be sure that no other candidate has them, but this question lets you brag a bit about why you're good for the role, so go for it.

Good luck!

Which is more important, people skills or technical skills? Technical skills, unless it is a purely customer service job.

Where do you see yourself in five years? Running the company.

Why do you want to work for this company? Because I need a job.

What separates you from our other candidates? I am proud of the work I do, and like to think of myself as great at what I do, and I take that wherever I go.

Those are all very common questions. I have some problems with your answers, hopefully you can clean them up before your next interview. Meanwhile, good luck on this job. People skills are not genetic, they can be learned, though personality traits are mostly developed at an early age. I would have responded that it depends on the job, then give what you think is appropriate for that position. I would have to research the casino dealer skills to comment because it's a matter of whether the boss wants you to schmooze or to take good care of their money.

When asked where do you see yourself in five years you should never say that you will be working somewhere else from where you are applying.

Asked why you want to work for this company and answering that someone said it's a good place to work is weak. If you really want the job, cite factual data about them to show that you have researched and are really interested in working for them. I would have described my passion for the dealer work, and discussed with some detail the success of that casino, their reputation, and then maybe throw in the recommendation from the friend. Don't make that one up, in case they ask the name.

"What separates you from our other candidates?" is probably the most common question for job interviews and can make or break you. Rather than just a line describing your exception skills, job ethic, or whatever, give specific examples from a previous job. In this case I would include something about interpersonal skills and the ability to diffuse a potentially nasty situation with an angry customer.
