Don't read too much into it. I have found that employers don't put as much emphasis on LinkedIn as interviewees do. For me, a company flew me out to interview me, a week later the HR lady added me on LinkedIn, and based on that I just knew I got the job. Long story short, I didn't.

LinkedIn is a waste of time for the most part. Don't spend too much time and energy worrying about this nonsense.

What you really meant was linkedin never worked for me so therefore is must not work for everyone.

If you truly know someone else who would be qualified for the opening he has, tell him you'll pass that information on to someone you know who might be a good fit. It's a courteous and helpful thing to do.
