I began filling out an online application for a company today. One in a very long line of online apps I've filled out over the past year. However, this one was different. On the bio page, it asked me for my SSN. Out of all the online apps I've filled out this past year, this is the first one that's asked for it. I couldn't opt out of it, either. I also noticed that their online app system was dated 2007. Not that I believe that makes much difference, but who knows? I filled out online apps in 2005, 2006 and 2007 without having to give my SSN. With all the identity theft running rampant these days, I feel uncomfortable (to say the least) about providing my SSN to this company.
Anyone else ever filled out an online app that asked for your SSN? If so, what did you do?
Do not put your SS# in an online application. If the company needs it at a later date, they will call and ask for it. Just put 000000 like NJBest suggested.
Thanks. I didn't think of that, but I'll give it a try. I can't really believe a company would even ASK for that! Not at the application level, at any rate.

Many do. It simplifies the process on their end. But most companies understand the privacy concerns and only ask upon giving an offer.
Yup. I was applying for a job at ADP and it asked me for a SSN. I sat there shocked and like you, saw no where that I could opt-out. I basically said the job isn't worth it for me to put in my SSN. Not with all the fake websites out there and identity theft. I never thought to put in zero's, good idea for next time.
I can't even comprehend why any company would need that. The only place I could see needing it would be some form of government (FBI, CIA, DHS?), still seems weird though.
A great way for identity theft to happen. Your addresses, birthday, and ssi, all this personal information passing through the hands of who? Once identity theft happens it is ALL on you to get it fixed.
