Even today people are still favored for jobs for reasons outside of their qualifications, personality, work ethic and abilities.

Read this: Unemployed Black Woman Pretends to be White, Job Offers Suddenly Skyrocket | Techyville

What I don't understand is why companies are willing to miss out on highly qualified people who would HELP THEM MAKE MONEY because those people look different from the person they see in the mirror. I would hire anyone who I believed had the skills to help my business!

I thought money was the bottom line in modern times. No?

Assuming this type of marginalization will never end.. what do you think will be the end result? Considering the shifting demographics of the U.S. will this just get worse? Will we end up like Mexico where the rich are strongly divided from the poor with walls, guard dogs and gates?

I am a black female who has never been unemployed for more than 2 weeks. Were I you I would not bother focusing on the pity partners and instead listen to the successful people. Find out what they have that you might emulate. That's far more productive than waiting for the world to change. And note that job offers didn't sky rocket at all in the article; in fact, as a white woman she still didn't receive a job offer at all! Maybe its her?

OP, that was an interesting link. I have always wondered about those diversity questions. The law says you can't discriminate against a person based on race or ethnicity but how do we really know that they don't do that anyways. I always avoid answering those question for the same reason as the girl in the article, but I am white.
Maybe you can try the same experience as the girl in the article. It would be fun to see the result.

And in order to increase workplace diversity we have hired females and African Americans who we would not have hired if they were white males, so it cuts both ways.

And how did you know they were black? By them answering the questions asking about their race? So employers are considering this when hiring even thought they are not suppose to.

But going to those diversity questions, I wonder how they influence who gets called for an interview or not. I was having lunch with a group of friends last week and someone raised this question saying that they applied to a few jobs selecting "2 races or more" and never got called but then selected "white" and got called. I thought that was a bit weird and now Im wondering how all this data is used. If they are not supposed to use this information why are they gathering it before hiring the person? If it's just to document who gets hired, then why not gather it post-interview/hire?

No, when they came in for an interview. We are not given any of that information.

Ok I got you.
But still, does the law not say you can't base your hiring decision based on race? I believe it happens all the time even if many people don't want to admit it.

Do people get hired without every seeing someone from the company? I don't get the issues with questions.
