I'm currently job searching and I only have about 3 or 4 good references to use. If I'm interviewing with several companies, how do I avoid having too many people calling my references and possibly annoying them?

Most reasonable places only call your references right before an offer.

The exception are some staffing agencies especially (they solicit them for sales) and some recruiters. I'd not give them out to staffing agencies.

I do not include a reference list, unless it's requested. Of the last 4 interviews, nobody asked for it. I landed a new job.

I have always stated in interviews that my references are, "available upon request". As someone else noted above, a company will usually only contact your references if they are serious about making you an offer.

It is also a good idea to make sure that you have gotten an "ok" from those you have listed as references, that they know you will be using them as such, that you are interviewing, and give them a heads up when you think a company may be reaching out to them.

No one is going to call your references unless you are in the final cut, so, unless you are in a lot of final cuts back to back, your references are not going to receive a lot of annoying phone calls.
