I'm 20, and due to my lack of skills and experience, I am only qualified for retail/customer service jobs. My last job was in November working in a retail store, and it was a seasonal position, but after 3 weeks I was informed that I was no longer needed, and since then I've been unemployed again. It's been about 2 months, I've applied to about 30+ positions, and attended 2 open houses, and still haven't received a single call back, It's really discouraging. Since I'm only qualified for retail my options are quite limited, and believe me, I have experience, I have a good resume, I dress presentably, yet I'm still not getting any calls back for interviews. I'm growing discouraged, but I won't lose hope because I know I need a job and I'm determined to find one. I just feel like I don't know the right approach anymore? I'm just not getting contacted for interviews despite applying to so many stores, and I feel like I could be out there working and having a job, but instead I'm forced to sit home and waste away unemployed, and feeling useless? There has to be more to life than this, I'm sure? I want a job, I'm ready to work, I'm ready to offer my skills to someone, but nobody is willing to hire me, so instead I'm stuck in this position and it totally sucks.

I have a feeling this will be one of those "excuse for everything" threads. What about the military?

I would say temping. I am not speaking from personal experience. When I was 21, I could only get a job in fast food. After a month, I took a temp assignment. I went permanent in 2 months.

The temp agencies will usually test you for typing speed, MS Word, and Excel. Jobs will depend on your city also. Some cities just don't have enough jobs.

Get a CDL? Construction?

Apply to way more than 30 jobs over a two month period. Landing a retail job is a numbers game. In two months you should be able to put out over 250 applications if you only do 4/day.

Mowing lawns, plowing snow, day laborer, military, temping, restaurant kitchen help, car wash towel person, apprentice in a trade (plumber, builder, mason), gas station attendant, stock boy in warehouse, town road crew, marina dock boy, recycle center sorter, copy center clerk/operator, ....

You just need to think outside the box a little bit. Hustle. Sell yourself. Grovel. Do what you have to do. One contact an hour is 20 contacts a day is 600 contacts a month. That ought to put you in touch with someone who knows somebody who will get you started.

Develop 2 plans. The first being long term career plan. The 2nd finding immediate work.

Only you can take care of the first plan.

For the 2nd plan, the two times I had no where else to turn, there was always a pizza delivery job open somewhere.
