but is all that really necessary if the site that has done that to you has a bad reputation on the internet itself? say a feminist site writing something bad about a man saying he hates women and harasses them when there is no proof of him having done any of that

Honestly, if it were me, I would push a little to try to get the information taken down. Yes, it's a pain in the butt, but maybe it doesn't have to come to a defamation suit. You could hire a lawyer and have them contact the site and demand it be taken down. That would cost you something, but maybe not that much.

Will they care to look into what the post is accusing you of or will they immediately reject you because your name ended up on a hate blog?
Generally a Cease and Desist order from an attorney can bring the desired result. And that should not cost you too much.

I, as a small business owner - would not immediately discount you just because you ended up the subject of a hate article. The accuser has only one side of the story. But I might bring it up in an interview, so you might want to prepare some sort of response.

Basically, I am going to weigh all factors. And if I bring it up in an interview, I am going to watch your response to it, and make my own judgement about whether your response to it is credible. Handled correctly, this sort of thing could give you an opening you otherwise might not have had.

It also COULD get you rejected out of hand - it sorta depends on the hiring manager, and sometimes your industry. Certain industries, like medical, for example, place far more emphasis on word-of-mouth than other industries do.

It depends. Are you the absolute best candidate or are there other candidates who are equally up to the task w/o the potential baggage?
