Just keep applying it's a numbers game. I applied to over 178 jobs within 6 months before I was hired. I'm a vet with two combat tours under my belt but I have over a decade of international exp and a Masters degree from a regionally ranked school with advanced IT Certs. I'm extremely qualified for my GS11 slot and even took a pay cut when I got hired. No matter if you are a vet or civ just make sure your resume shows the best version of you. There are a ton of top notch candidates you're going up against. Also the interview portion matters. If you look good on paper but can't sell yourself in the interview then that job is as good as gone. This isn't a you against the world type deal. It's a you against a bunch of other folks like you gunning for the exact same job.

I don't agree it's a numbers game because even if someone applies to 178 jobs they may only be qualified for 23 of them.

Exactly, the more someone applies to the more hits they get. I'm not saying apply to just anything either. Make sure you're qualified first then apply. I'm a 2210 series so I had lots to pick from when I wasn't a fed. I'm not sure how other field are. You will never get the job if you never apply.
Last night I applied for a TSA position at my nearby airport, and unlike the DOJ position I applied for back in October, I received positive and informative updates immediately upon submission (and another update this morning). Although the job posting doesn't close until next Tuesday, I'm far more impressed with how user friendly the TSA application and feedback was, but till this very day, I haven't received one syllable of feedback from the DOJ position I applied for.
I guess different agencies respond differently to applicants.
I just recently received a referred email and a rating of 93, so what are my chances of getting the job. I am a vet, but the announcement stated due to the shortage, veteran preference won't be use. I'm currently with the federal government and I was a police officer for 15+ years, so I hope that also help. The position is for a background investigator and if they want to make job offers 40 days after the close of the announcement, I should hear something soon? I just want to know my chances, because the job was only open for 2 or 3 days. The job closed on February 20th and I received the email on February 27th.
oh the wait is intense and exciting!93 is an ok rating. sucks you don't get to use your vet preference. I would think you have a great chance with your law enforcement background. I am a current federal employee too and applied for a job in florida. i believe vet preference only applies to external announcements so i applied externally. good luck! i hope you get that phone call soon. until then, you really never know.
I find it absolutely ridiculous the amount of stuff that goes into applying for a federal job. I have been told that when I have applied for other federal jobs that since I did not give up and kept with it that is one of the hardest parts of getting a federal job. People get turned off by the amount of electronic paperwork that goes into this b.s.
I actually see this as one of the smarter things the Feds do. It helps weed out unqualified candidates that just submit their resume to everything. Most private companies don't put all that effort in to pre-screening candidates, and as such get inundated with resumes they have to pick through via keyword (which is not that effective) for decent candidates.
Basically it just displayed all of the information I had entered into my application, and then at the bottom showed "Rating: 98"
...
I'm assuming 98 is out of 100?
Not quite. Years ago my parents took a test for ten Federal government job openings at Lakehurst naval base, my father was a veteran, so he got a 5 points added to his test. My father scored 103 on the test, my Mother 98. My father was one of the first people they called for an interview (and he got the job), they never called my mother.

This is true, but it also dissuades the highly qualified applicant that has options. The hiring process is a real barrier to hiring the best candidates. Not only the application process, but the waiting; the best candidates will have had other options during the waiting time period.
