I have done exactly what you mentioned, and the company actually reimbursed me for entire trip. I even brought this to their attention, as I had agreed to cover add'l nights personally (only did this to brown nose) and they stated they wanted to reimburse for entire trip as it was work related.
I wanted to update again, since my previous update was rather negative (and frustrated, at the time!)
car rental snafu got figured out, and the trip went quite well. I was able to cancel the company-funded car rental (that required two round trips back to LGA), went with the usual car service, and booked my own car rental.
I could tell the hiring manager was really pleased to hear that I'd extended the trip to check out the area. It got brought up during conversation, and it was obvious she was pleased that I cared enough about the job to check out the area and possible areas to live. Definite points in my favor.
I have done this several times over the years. However, don't use the "tourist approach". Say you want to spend a day or two scouting out the area for relocation purposes. This sends a serious message to them.
Glad it all worked out, sounds like the person doing travel didn't know what they were doing.
This is for anyone reading this for info.
I do all the travel for candidates and I know the recruiters are REALLY happy to hear people want to stay longer and scope out the area (it shows they're serious about moving). I contact the candidate and tell them what we'll pay for (the typical time frame for an interview) and what they're on their own for. I also let them know, as long as the airfare is comparable to what we'd typically pay, then they can go home any time. One candidate is staying for a week! We personally don't care if they stay longer after or before.
The rental car is the hardest because we don't want to pay for it and have the candidate reimburse us and we don't want them to book it because we get better rates. So, the poor candidates have to return the car (after the interview timeframe) and book one for themselves.
So far, with every single candidate that has stayed beyond their interview time frame....the airfare was cheaper, so that makes us happy. One was almost $300 cheaper; my boss was very happy.
ladyvictoria, sorry, but I can't. My field is really specialized, and even a few details could 'out' me. I try to stay as anonymous as possible!
It is alright. Thanks for responding anyway.
