As an employer how would you look upon an applicant that is a volunteer firefighter?

Should I do 3 internships before graduating or 2 internships and volunteer firefighter? I don't actually want to be a firefighter as a career, I just want to build up my resume, and have interesting experiences. I'm a computer science major.

Depends on the internship, the hiring manager and the recommendation you can get from the fire chief.

I would view it as a positive, but YMMV.

It's definitely a positive. Especially as a CS major. It shows you have some personality and depth. It's also something to small talk about.

If you are not interested in being a VFF, don't do it just to try to improve your resume. You do realize that VFFs can die, right? I knew one voly who had a heart attack fighting a fire. I knew another one who had scars on his face from when a floor collapsed and he fell into a basement. He was trapped, his mask started to melt to his face, his O2 alarm went off (meaning he was almost out of oxygen) and he thought he was going to burn to death. He was rescued in time. You need to have a passion for it and you need to know that you are not playing some kind of ****ing game. Since you asked, IMO, people who want to be VFFs in order to try and impress someone are pathetic cheese dicks.

As an employer, I want to know what their shift obligation is, how it is going to interfere with their full time job and their ability to get to work on time.

Do the internships. More opportunities to network, get names, make a good impression, etc.
