I've pretty well told them 'no', not because of the airline ticket but primarily because the job's in Miami, and I don't want to live there. First I thought I could commute from Palm Beach County to Miami, but it turns out that it's too long a commute.
Yes, this organization is grant-based, including Federal and State, so they might have limitations on how much they can spend on recruiting candidates.
It is funny though how that little thing, the airline ticket, made me start disliking the idea of working for them. It's relatively inconsequential but it made me wonder how financially strapped they are, like do they have money for adequate computers and things like that.
Sometimes it's just policy. My wife had to fly to Houston for a job interview as a teacher. She paid for the ticket and she got the job the next day. They offered quite a bit more than the public schools in Houston were offering. The school is in a really great place financially, but their policy is to not fly teachers in.
Then don't apply for an out-of-state position. That's pretty simple.
Agreed, because there are hundreds of other applicants that will spend the money to fly out. It's an employer's world right now, the days of low unemployment and companies scrambling to find people are out the door.
Take an interview that you pay air, hotel, car, etc. Don't get the job - sink further into debt.
Take another interview that you pay air, hotel, car, etc. Don't get the job - sink further into debt.

Nobody here in Silicon Valley would ever consider paying out of their own pocket for something company-related.
Company needs to pay the airfare, plain and simple.

A for profit tech company is nothing at all like a non profit community health organization.

I wouldn't
I didn't realize that the OP was in debt. Thanks for pointing that out.
ellemint, you might want to also focus on taking on your irresponsible behavior that got you in debt. Employment is only a small piece of the puzzle. Someone in your low financial standing should not be considering a move at this time. A move like that is risky and you should be looking for financial stability. Rethink this entire thing. I can't believe that you are thinking of making such a move when you have debt.

This is the most absurd thing that I've heard in this thread. How many nonprofits are hiring in silicon valley?
If they won't drop 300 to interview you when they claim they want you, big red flag. No way. What are they going to go cheap on day to day? Recruitment is being whined, dined, and offering other incentives from interview as well as relocation expenses.
That's what I was thinking. They recruit someone from 1300 miles away because it's so hard to find a qualified person. . But they won't pay for ticket. ..hmm

Based on the OP, I'm not too sure they were trying to recruit someone from 1300 miles away. I'm curious how much the recruiter knew about the fact that he closed on a condo and would be moving to the area.
