My spouse's job is relocating us (I am currently unemployed). We haven't sold our house yet but the market is heating up and hope to sell in the next month or so.
My DREAM JOB has just been posted but I have no idea if I will be able to start by the general start date (sometime in June).
Should I bother applying? Is it too bold to ask if I can have a later start date IF they consider me? Would that just come off as rude?
This is a mid-level position with a large city, not a small company or very specialized job.
Apply, let them know you are already in the process of relocating to their city. Don't bring up a start date until you actually have an offer in hand.
If you have to move before the house sells, you can get a property management company or realtor to handle the sale while you are out of town. You can make one trip back if needed for the closing.
You can always stay in an extended stay type place until your house sells. I wouldnt pass up a dream job because I wasnt moving there for another month or 2.
Even if you do apply, I wouldn't count on a mid-June start date. I have never been able to go from application date to first day of work within 4 weeks.
It takes 2-3 weeks to go through HR screen and 2 rounds of interviews.
It takes another week for approval of salary and budget, if they decide to hire you. If somebody took a week off for vacation(especially with Memorial Day weekend coming up), you are looking at 2 weeks for approvals.
When you do accept, they expect you to give 2 weeks notice to the prior employer.
You are looking at July start date or even later.
At one job, I applied in September and did not receive an offer until February. There was a last minute hiring freeze, after the job was posted.
Go ahead and apply. The timeline to start is likely later than you think.
