I am just curious what people think, and specifically HM's.

If a candidate determines the job will not be a good fit is it rude to politely cut it short and thank them for their time?

I ask because I am looking at this company that invited me straight to interview w/o phone screen and am I already seeing this may not be a good fit for me. I figure I should go and try to keep an open mind, but want a tactful way to cut it short if I confirm it's not for me.

In all my years of selling there were times I just spoke up and said not a good fit for this prospect, but I guess I feel like it's different for interviewing?

In my experience, no. You never burn bridges in the business community. It might seem like the consequences are null, but you could end up in the future running into the very people you burned and in such a case your decision proves very regretful.

Judge by the situation - if you feel comfortable cutting it short in a way that is polite and not abrupt then do so. When I was a HR I would have absolutely appreciated someone cutting it short if they don't feel it'll work.

Is your time really that valuable that you can't hear them out? I could see letting them know at the end of the interview you don't think it's a good fit, but they liked your resume enough to ask you to interview - you don't know if there won't be other positions opening up that might suit you better.

I think the OP's time IS that valuable. If it's not a good fit, and not worthy of the employer's time either, end politely when the interviewer appears to be wrapping up. You don't even really need to say anything: a lot of times, it's very obvious to everyone in the room that this won't work out. Saying nothing sometimes say the most.

I have stopped interviews, when the salary range was too low. It freed them up to work on other candidates. It's respectful of their time.

Not at all, why waste your time?

I should have added, I work right now about 50 hours a week, so yes my time is valuable. I also tend to qualify upfront on the phone since I am employed, and the lack of phone screen is what is throwing me out of synch a bit.

Good tips along the lines of what I was thinking.

I have had friends in the field just walk about with a good luck when they thought the HM was rude to them. I don't think I would do that, but yeah there have been interviews where I thought I wish I would have known this before I drove her.

It's being burned by current employer so bad that has my guard up. I should have listened to my intuition instead I let a "friend" convince me otherwise that it would be a good place to work.

The interviewers time is also valuable, and it's wasteful for them to continue a bogus interview and later have a discussion
about your possible hire if you are no longer interested. I would gain a lot of respect for you, and in fact, be more likely to consider you for a future opening in a job that was more suited to you. We disclose the salary range ahead of time, and if someone used that as the reason it would be another matter, I would fel like they had been wasting my time from the start.

Thanks, for the feedback.
