Why would you think you're second fiddle based on people guessing what it could be????????
NONE of us knows what she means. Best not to even think about it. When do you start the job with the other company?
I start next Friday. It seems plausible...needing to speak to the hiring manager's boss to talk about what they are gonna do with the job? Seems like she came up with something to stall time.

I just accepted a job offer, but in my last interview at the company the hiring manager mentioned to me she talked to the CEO about the position and had some new longer term expectations/goals that came up in the conversation. And then asked me how I felt about them, and if it was stuff I was interested in. So it is entirely plausible.

Cool thanks. I should've asked her the probability of me getting the offer

It is possible that there was a delay, but it is very, very likely they are negotiating with another candidate (sorry). It might be worth emotionally stepping away from the situation (if possible!) and re-evaluating whether or not you want to work for a company that 1) didn't select you as their first choice 2) clearly lied to you 3) if you went to work there there would be at least a few people that always know that you weren't the first choice.
UPDATE: I received a call just now from the recruiter and she said that the corporate office did not approve the job - something to that effect. So apparently the job is no longer existent. She said that the hiring manager wanted to bring me in and nobody else. I said she knows where to find me if another opportunity develops later on, we agreed to touch base in a month or so. But I'm guessing that's simply lip service from her, if anything.
Thanks again everybody.
