So long story short, I have previously applied to twopositions at a fortune 350 company to which I got interviews for both. Thefirst position, which was heavily related to my education and internshipexperience, I went through two phone interviews (HR and Manager) and then anon-site interview with three different interviewers.

The second job wasn’t so much related to my pastexperiences, but I had adequate skills that could suit me well in the position.This time there was no phone interview but we jumped right to an on-siteinterview, lasting a little longer than the previous on-site interview.

The reason I am making this thread is because I am anentry-level job seeker and I thought both interviews went very well. Perhapsthis is just the real world smacking me in the face, but usually I do exceedinglywell on interviews in the past. (Internships, smaller jobs)

Now I realize that they likely just found better candidates,but something about them, the first one in particular, just kind of catches meoff guard. In my first interview, the last person to interview me was thehiring manager. She even took me out to lunch to further talk about my personalqualifications and interests. After the interview, she gave me her businesscard and I asked her when I would likely hear back about the position. She saidthese processes likely take about a month. I however heard back two days laterwith a generic rejection email from HR. I was kind of taken by surprise to behonest. I may have slipped up on one question with the second interviewer, butotherwise things seemed to go well.

As far as the second positions goes, there was no lunch butI had two of the 5 or 6 interviewers really commend about my skills, motivationand knowledge of the position. They described me as a well-rounded candidate. Iended again with the hiring manager and politely asked when I could hear aboutthe status of the position. This time she said they have another candidate theyare considering and it would probably take a few weeks. This time around ittook about three weeks, but this time I checked my application status onlineand it was listed as “no longer being considered” with no personal notificationfrom HR.

I am not going to go through the intricacies of theinterviews but does anyone else know if I might be making a rookie mistake? Ifeel as though I am doing most things right, but have an odd feeling I am notadjusting towards something the corporate environment wants from me. (Previouslyworked non-profit)

Any advice is welcome!

To be honest, there are so many factors to consider, that unless we are sitting there with you during the interview there is no way you can get good feedback.

It could have gone from there being better internal candidates all the way down to the hiring manager not liking what you ordered at lunch.

Long story short, you need to treat job interviews like dating. No matter how good you think you are and how good of a match you are, it's all up to the other person. If they say no, you can't force them to love you. You shrug, say OK, and move on to the next opportunity.

Fair enough. I was just kind of scratching my head when the first manager said I would hear back in about a month after buying me lunch, only to get rejected two days later. One source from inside the company said it could have been they sought someone internally. I just wanted to check and see if anyone else had a common experience and if it signified a common error that new entry level candidates make.
