Asking for references can be a nice way of not being able to say we don't want you.
If they haven't contacted your references I wouldn't count on this one.
that doesn't make any sense, why ask for references if they dont want you?

This makes no sense and I've never heard of anyone who would do this.
Would you also ask a woman for a date as a way of indicating you're not interested in her?

Since it was only 2 days left in the week I would not say that just yet. Atleast have to give it until next Thursday
Them asking for your references is a good thing! When we hire we only ask for references of people who we are considering to hire.
However, we usually ask for references from the 'top' interviewees which could mean 2 to 5 people. Now this process can take a little longer than it should because most "references" are busy people with jobs too who may not get back to us right away. Unlike my last company we don't hold this, references taking their time to get back to us, against the candidate.
It never hurts to send an email or make a phone call to check in on the position, this can actually be a point that tips the scale in your favor. Never send more than one unless a considerate amount of time has passed (my opinion).

That's why I think he should send a email on Thursday evening so he can get some kind of update before the week is over since the email would be in the person's mailbox on Friday Morning
