I saw an unusual situation on LinkedIn today. A job posting was up where the company remained anonymous. This was a professional position in IT. Why would a company go anonymous? Would you apply to an anonymous ad as a candidate?
In my profession (social work) it is not uncommon to place ads that don't list the company name. That is how I found my current job on Craigslist and it wasn't a scam. I guess it just depends on the type of job and industry. Mine is listed under non-profits.
As a general rule, if I can't find much information on a company it's a red flag. My last job had little to nothing about it anywhere and it was a terrible place.
Sometimes big and notable companies post anonymous ads to hide the fact they're hiring from their competition. It's not unheard of at all and pretty common practice actually.
I agree with others that it's not that uncommon to publish a blind ad. Aside from the reasons given, many companies don't want applicants phoning or walking in the door unannounced.
As far as being careful with personal information to an 'unknown' employer, I have sent my resume listing only my name and cell phone number (no address).
I wouldn't. Companies do go anonymous for IT positions when they are replacing someone, but I wouldn't risk sending my info to a scammer. If you are interested in the job, maybe the recruiter would give you the name or someone else in the industry would know?
