Quick rundown:

I'm looking to transition industries and reached out to an individual at a company via LinkedIn for an informal discussion.

I received a positive response and the next week was in his office having an actual job interview for a position that would suit me perfectly. It went really well and after sending a thank you email, I heard from the HR director (not the person i met with) about 3 days after asking me dates and times to schedule a follow up discussion with him. With high hopes I responded immediately and gave my availability for the next week.

That was where communication ended. Even after following up via email to both parties and leaving a voicemail, I never heard from them again.

I assume they were keeping me in the wing in case their first choice didn't work out but the whole scheduling a second interview and never responding thing left a bad taste in my mouth.

This typical?

What a strange set of events. The whole thing seems strange. Starting with you reaching out to someone that I assume you don’t know at all (without an intro through at least a third party or something), then him/her saying that they will see you, and then it turning into an interview, and all the other things. All this for an industry that you have no experience in. Just bizarre.

No this is not typical but I wish you the best of luck.

Believe it or not I've had fairly good luck using LinkedIn to network. This company happened to have a junior level role vacant so it morphed from an informal discussion to an interview for the job.

I do think the events that proceeded were slightly odd though. This all went down going on 3 weeks ago.

I believe a no response (which is rude) is very typical.

How long since you sent your email about your availability?

Normal. I've had several opportunities die on the vine.

Its just another hypocrisy of HR. They will not respond to your emails, but you BETTER respond to theirs. They wont spell correctly, but you better...etc
