What more could a young person want than having an apartment, having a job, starting a family and living a normal adult life?

I have applied to over 20 jobs within the past month. Only 3 responded with "Positions filled. Sorry."
2 scheduled interviews, only to get a rejection response. I feel like it's a waste of time, money, resources, trying to go to interviews with no guarantee of finding a job. I've been doing this for 2 years and couldn't find that good job that pays. At this point, it's driving me nuts and I'm this close to throwing in the towel.

Am I the only one who sees this as one big game of lottery?

I can see the analogy. BUT, you get to buy as many "tickets" as you have the time for. I'm going through a little bit of this myself; sorry to hear about your trouble.

Yes, basically the contemprary job market is more like a contest or lottery, rather than supply filling a demand.

Lottery is about luck and entirely about luck, so no, I don't see it that way.

But, I didn't start my career with a good job that pays well. Certainly not enough to have my own apartment, or to start a family. That's something to be earned in time. I just wanted a job to start building experience and I lived with multiple roommates for a long time.

It's not a lottery. It's a game and the only way to win is to NEVER quit playing.

I think it's a lottery in some ways but eventually everyone who keeps playing will win something.

Then I wish I did as well with the State Lottery as I have in the job lottery.

For the OP, are you applying for jobs you are actually qualified to do?

Are you applying for jobs in a saturated market?

Maybe think of other things you can do.

I held a job for twenty years I got after college because my field of study was saturated and the economy was basically dead.

So you applied to 20 jobs and got 2 interviews? Seems like a pretty good rate to me.

And I absolutely agree and had the same experience as Timberline. It took a good while before I was able to live what you call a normal adult life. Hopefully, you can look back into this time of your life with fondness. Don't get too stuck on this negativity for too long, that's wasting your time here in life.

Best of luck

Someone once posted a link about how the workplace is like the game of throes. And looking for a job is no different. That job everyone is fighting over is the throne and like the show says: when you play the game of thrones you either wiN or you die.

So yeah it is like a lottery, but what choice do we all have but to play?

I suppose it varies by job market and specialty-

For me, I know positions I work in tend to get flooded with 75-250 applicants per new hire.
At that point where half are of considerable quality, it's still of lottery-like proportions to be the candidate chosen.
Frankly without a connection it's unlikely your resume would even be read.

I know others who have people calling them about jobs. Just simply their career has higher turnover or they deal with weird recruitment systems which I don't understand.

It's a shame so many people who went to college have so few marketable job skills, and also so many licensed careers are having states issue far more licenses then would ever be needed.

I think this rough job market may persist a long time.
