Hi,

I was just offered a job today, contingent of course on passing the background check.

I'm a little worried because I guesstimated my dates of employment for some of my previous employers, simply because I didn't remember exact dates. Years are all correct, but maybe the exact dates are off by a few months or days.

Of course, my most recent employment dates are correct because that's fresh in my memory.

Everything else (e.g. employers, titles held, position duties, education, etc.) is correct and 100% accurate.

I also have great credit and no criminal background.

But I am worried about the date issue. It wasn't an attempt to inflate dates to fill gaps or anything...these were jobs I held 3-6 years ago and I simply forgot exacts dates I worked there. Instead of digging for the exact info, I was lazy and just estimated as closely as I could to memory, as I didn't think it would be a big deal, since I wasn't making up anything or trying to fake anything.

Could these small date discrepancies potentially result in my offered getting rescinded?

When I'm calling references I'm not looking for exact dates; I'm looking for how long you worked there and what kind of an employee you were. I also want to know if your previous employer would re hire you. The actual background check is for credit/criminal info...I think you'll be fine.

Good luck!!

I agree - nobody is going to make that a sticking point. Everyone I know struggles with this.

Congratulations, by the way!

As long as you didn't really fudge it up you will be fine. If you worked somewhere one month and said it was 10 or something.

I don't remember my exact dates either. Don't worry about it-they don't ask for the exact time you started work.

You should be fine as long as you weren't 3-6 months off. 1-2 months should be fine. I've had past employeers/supervisors call me during BGC to ask when I started at positions and they were off by about a year! They always had thought I had been working at places a year longer than I actually was. Never hurt me.
