Thanks for the replies! They are down-selecting from 10 to 6 candidiates, and I'd rather that they pick 6 candidates truly interested in the job. I am not, and didn't want to drag this on.
Hope this kind of consideration and follow through takes you far!
Sure can, I recently withdrew myself from consideration for a position the day after the interview. While I liked the position/organization and management, I had to be honest with myself and admit the commute was not for me.
Good thing that came out of the experience is I now know how far I can search for a new position.....Reston/Herndon to far, Fairfax/Chantilly much better....

You didn't know how far the job was from your home before the interview? That's one of the first things I find out before even applying to the job so just wondering how you were not aware of the commute before the interview?

it's different knowing how far it is and "commuting" that far each day.

Someone is supposed to already know the traveling time before applying to a job so they don't waste time going to a interview. Every single job I applied to when unemployed was close to home because I never been a fan of long commutes.

I meant it's different between knowing it is just a once time trip to interview then having to sit in it day in and day out for the next 10 years. I could put up with driving 1 hour for a weekend trip, but I won't make that trip everyday either.
To support eyeb a bit, some jobs allow telework, but you don't know how much until you interview. This is a federal job and they often don't post their telework policies clearly. Many times, it is reliant on the supervisor and you wouldn't know until the interview. Two days a week of a 45 minute commute vs five days a week is a big difference.
