I've only been looking for about two months, and my job isn't going away until year-end or so. So I am way, way luckier than many people. And yet I am already fed up.
Fed up with recruiters who lie. Fed up with taking time off from work, researching companies and interviewers, getting dressed up, driving or taking the train to the interview, and sending individualized thank-yous to everyone I meet, and then never. Hearing. Anything. Back.
Fed up with companies looking for people with a list of 50 qualifications and then bemoaning the fact that they can't find candidates who speak three languages and are well-versed in some obscure accounting system.
I can completely understand why the UE rate is down, and why so many have given up. And I know it will get even worse once I'm officially unemployed, so I continue to push, all the while my employer dumps more and more work on me, even though they're moving my job hundreds of miles away.
So sorry to hear about your experience. It is indeed frustrating. I was unemployed for almost 18 months after company layoffs, and went through the same thing. On top of being one of the unemployed during the peek of the recession, I was also 60 years old and experienced age discrimination. Eventually I found a company who valued older, more stable employees, and have been with this company for 14 months. Don't give up, and try to remain positive (yes, I know - easy to say, hard to do). Take it a day at a time, and network like crazy. That's how I got my current job. Best of luck.
I, too, am luckier than most. I have a good job with good security. The problem is, my husband and I HATE where we live. We moved here to be closer to my brothers family...and they left the area almost 2 years ago. So we are left "alone" in this place.
I've been looking for about a year, off an on. I've had exactly 1 interview.
Yes, I know it's more difficult to find something from a distance (we're in PA looking in FL). And the recruiters are a real PITA.
I was recently in that roller coaster ride! 6 months after being laid off until job offer/acceptance. It stinks.
First, I would put more emphasis on finding a job then your current employer -- especially as they are going to lay you off. Also, recruiters do lie, a lot...or at best, embellish the truth. I guess they feel job seekers are so desperate they will take any job and they are very good at discounting any misgivings you may have about jobs they present to you. Plus, many recruiters have quotas to fill so aren't exactly in your corner.
Job interviewing stinks too! Once I became more confident interviewing, I feel I did so much better. I also experienced many professional HR people, hiring managers as well as many inept. Sorta like the saying " you gotta kiss a lot of frogs before finding your prince"

Rant over. Thanks.
