I was hoping to take a job as a civilian specialist for the police. I have no criminal history, no debt, no history of accidents or DUI's. I even have 3.79 GPA Bachelors in Political Science from the University of Kansas. The problem is that I have no work experience, not even volunteer or internships. For the past 6 years I was focused on school. First, I went to JCCC for three years; then, I went spent the remaining three years at KU. I was simply reluctant to let work interfere with my schooling. I do know that they have had a difficult time filling positions because most people have some kind of record. I am just wondering if it is unwise to think I can get the job without almost any work experience? The closest thing I had to work experience was working for 13 months for my brother-in-law at Pizza Hut when I was in high school.

What exactly does a "civilian specialist" do, and what are the minimum requirements? Not having any work experience or internships is a black mark for me.

I looked up a job posting for this position online. I'm not sure of your location, but this particular job posting does not require any work experience. They do, however, require the candidates to be in top physical condition (weight, eyesight, etc.). That alone would put most people out of the running.

Have you seen the job posting? That is the best way to find out.

I have seen the job posting, but the only thing I was truly terrified of the lack of work experience.

In CA, a friend of a friend needed to wait 6 more months to apply for a police related job. She had smoked some wacky tabacky and the cops want people who have not done any drugs in the last 5 years;that includes smoking weed.

good news is KCUR said Kansas was some 500 state troopers short... bad news is that they are short because they aren't filling it, something about not enough "quality" applicants...

work experience aside, the police I know got it through prior connections (either military/another police force)... security guards at work double as police. I'm willing to bet that the civilian specialist would require a connection as well mostly because of budget restraints and that it is a "public" job...

that said, you could volunteer with the police. KCPD Chief: Volunteering at the Police Department
