Hello All,
This is the first time I have been on this particular forum, but since I am a job seeker I figured I would try it.
I am a teacher that decided to take a chance and did not sign a contract for this current school year. I have been wanting to leave the K-12 teaching profession and am seeking corporate training jobs. I have been job hunting since the school year ended in May. I have gotten a few calls for interviews but they have not turned into jobs yet. The problem is that I feel that many employers see all of the teaching experience (I was a music teacher for 9 years) and they don't see the other skills that a teacher has gained in this time that are transferable to a corporate environment. I am back in school for Instructional Design and Technology in e-learning. I would like to eventually work for a government or educational institution designing training and colleges courses online.
I have a Bachelor of Music and a Masters of Science in Education Technology.
I wonder if this is a turn off for some employers because I may have too much education. I live in Phoenix and the average job posting for a trainer is asking for someone with a high school diploma at the minimum. With me being up against people with a minimum of H.S. degree I feel I am passed over because my salary wishes would be a bit higher. I have not been able to crack $40,000 teaching in the Phoenix metro area with my degree.
I would love to start at $40,000 or $20.00 an hour. I have been applying for training jobs at the casinos, banks, school districts, financial institutions, tech companies, call centers, universities/education sector. I have applied for customer service jobs, management jobs. You name it I applied.
I have begun applying for teaching jobs again because I just cannot find anything.
One of the things I have heard is that a lot of the jobs that are open are going to internal candidates and that using a job board is not the way to apply for a job. Networking seems to be the way people are getting jobs nowadays. My mother was in HR for 30+ years so I know my resume is solid.
If there is anyone in the Phoenix area looking for a person with experience in teaching/training or knows of any other positions I am not seeing out there, please let me know.
Happy job hunting to all!
