Recently: My firm was interviewing for a developer position. The candidate showed up with hair that had clearly not been washed in at least a day, probably several days. Aside from the hair I had enough concerns about him that I did not recommend him for hiring. We brought him on as an independent contractor and he lasted for about a month.

Many years ago I interviewed with a firm that provided computer tech support for traders at the Chicago board of trade. Most of the interview consisted of the interviewer telling me all the reasons why I would not want the job (high stress, angry traders, verbal abuse, etc). I was not offered the position and even if I had been, after that interview I would have declined.

Ive learned when they start telling you why the job is not a good one, or why youd hate it, they DONT want to hire you, and hey just dont have the guts to tell you no.

i interviewed for a sales rep at compusa (minimum wage). the interviewer in the middle of the interview told me to sell him on buying a bic pen.
i felt silly, i had to talk about how the black cap prevents the ink from drying and the plastic grip is very comfortable...

i saw an ad in the metro about government jobs in multiple fields and i called for an interview. i got dressed up and took the subway to the location. the interviewer was very condescending but i remained professional (e.g.- i put my briefcase on the table and he said "it should go on the floor under the table; thats ok, you dont know any better").

after about 15 minutes i figure out he doesnt work for the federal government. he is selling classes on how to fill out applications for government jobs ($500). i still remain professional and politely decline and ask if there is any literature for me to go over at home. he says "what are you gonna' hang it on your wall and admire it".

another: i was talking at a booth at a job fair and the owner told me to come by and interview with their tech specialist named juan.
so i go down there and an asian-american guy asks 'can i help you ?' and i said 'yeah i'm here to see juan'.
he says something like '...i'll go get him...' as he walked away.
10 minutes later he comes back like 'there you are i was wondering where you went'. and i repeat 'yes, i'm waiting for juan'. and he says 'yeah, thats me, i told you to follow me'. and i'm looking at him like 'youre juan ?'. and hes like 'yeah'.
so two weeks later i look at the schedule and i see his name is spelled wan. and so i'm like 'oh, youre wan'.

Well, I thought it was really weird. I politely declined. Since the interview was late in the evening I said I was having dinner soon.

The other interviewer ate the Skittles from the table. And they both enjoyed the skittles.

Needless to say I did not get the job. I think I failed the fit test. But heck no was I going to eat skittles from an unknown table from people I don't know!

Have you had any weird interview experiences? What is your strangest one?
Probably 'but' buddies and candy buddies

I interviewed for a job and noticed that the interviewer had pictures of Harleys all over his office. I asked him what model Harley he rode, he asked me if I rode and I stated that I did.
He went on for over an hour about the trips he went on and the people he went with.
At the end when he finally caught his breath, he asked me when I could start.

I once had an unsuccessful candidate, a 45-year old guy, curl up into a fetal position in his chair and refuse to leave my office after I told him he wasn't getting the job. Had to call security to come get him.

Also had some Army Lieutenant who applied for an intel job go all "Major Flagg" on me when I told him his MP work didn't qualify him for intel. "I've seen and done things you're not cleared to know about!!" Just as a courtesy I called the DoD agency that I was working with - as soon as I mentioned his name the people on the other end of the phone started screaming and laughing; apparently he was a well-known pest.

I worked for a small company that had just moved into a new building. They were working on the fire alarm and setting it off a lot one day and we had an interviewee sitting in the conference room waiting for us to come in when one went off. My boss stopped me and said - "Wait; let's see what he does." He got up, looked out (glass wall) and saw people not running for the exits and sat back down. We ended up hiring him, not just based on that of course, but my boss said if he had been panicked by it he probably would not have hired him.

The interviewer and I started networking and talking about our past. Turns out that he and I knew some of the same people and worked for the same people 15 years ago. I ended up with the offer.

We interviewed a guy recently and he got the old "What is your greatest weakness?" question. After careful consideration, he responded that his greatest weakness is that his wife won't let him spank his stepchildren.
