I received an offer from a company contingent on background/reference checks. While I think they will come back OK, I'd rather not resign until I know everything is good.

Is it OK to ask the new company's HR contact (that I have) about when they might be completed? i.e. "I was curious as to when you thought the background and reference checks will be complete, so I'll know everything is good to go!"

I'd just say "Can you please let me know as soon as I have passed the background/reference checks so I can promptly put in notice at my current company?"
