I'm starting a new job next week. I signed paperwork, but they didn't mention a drug test. Does that mean they won't do one at this late date?

Not every employer drug tests but that doesn't mean that one will not be conducted in the future. If you are using illegal drugs then I suggest you choose between the job and the drugs.

Depends on what was in that paperwork you signed - did you read it?

Was it a contingent offer?

Generally speaking, unless they tell you straight up front that the offer is continent upon you showing up and taking a drug test within X hours, then there's not likely to be a drug test.

That said, I've had a boatload of people hear me say that, sign the acknowledgement, take a copy that contains the address for the test site and instructions - then never show up to the test. They show up to work day one to me telling them to take a hike.

So, scramble on back and read that paperwork you signed. You did get a copy, right?

An employer can demand a drug test at any time. I've experienced it before and after I've started working.

it means they likely won't- drug tests are just random for new hires; but in most companies handbooks they state they're drug use policy (which is usually a don't use).

But depending on the area where you live- it may just not make sense for a company to drug test. I'm in the bay area- started a new job recently and there was no mention of one. I had a friend who recently took a new job in SF as well and the recruiter actually laughed when asked if they do drug testing. I guess if they did, most companies assume they won't clear and wouldn't have much of an applicant pool.

But again, you could always be randomly tested if they suspect drug use

If you operate a vehicle or equipment drug testing is in your future.

I am close to 40 and I was employment drug tested only once in my lifetime.

In my last job search, I interviewed with the company that does mandatory drug tests and background checks for the medical industry. We did not hit it off on the interview as the manager said that the previous person in that position was a 9-5er. I leave the office at 5:00 p.m sharp.

I even ordered some tea on amazon that supposedly masks the weed in my urine.

The thing is, I am in a situation where I can openly tell recruiters that I have no intention on passing an employment drug test for marijuana.

In my previous position, my employment contract stated that the company reserves the right to drug test at any time. After working for that company for over 1 year, something became hilariously obvious. A company wide drug tests, more then 50% of current employees would fail from marijuana.

There are industries where this is mandatory though.

I mean if we legalized weed, law enforcement professionals would be able to enjoy it.

I have only looked in to it quickly, but living in a Medical Marijuana State, and not denying that I use the medicinal properties of this substance, getting a formal prescription might help with drug tests and legal problems (should any arise).

But I would expect this to cost a couple thousand bucks. MJ stays in your blood for a month, while dangerous drugs like cocaine and heroine only stay for a couple of days.
