I have ADHD and Aspergers, so the positions of sales, call center, waitress, etc are not really an option. I was aiming AWAY from manual labor as that was the whole freaking point at busting my butt through all them hours in college. I was an honors student in high school. Even had an AP course. In community college, I still got honors. In university, I struggled a bit more and ended up with a 3.04. However, I do have a computer science degree (Bachelors) and Associates of Arts and Associates of Science. Should be able to get something, right? Wrong! I also don't drive (at the advice of my own family). I also didn't do an internship in college (wanted to, but was advised against it by family, plus I'm rural and most of those internships aren't, so I'd have to drive there or be driven).

So I was getting some callbacks at first, but, after a year, no job, started getting less. Granted, I did have a few volunteer positions, but still hasn't helped. Did get help from a DORS career council but still not helping.

Two years go by and still not getting much. In fact, getting less callbacks or replies and little interviews. In fact, directly related to my career, I only had ONE interview to speak of. The rest were rather distantly related to the field.

I think it may be my resume, my career DORS councilor said it was better not to list the skills but just the degrees and stuff (I think that was a bad move on their part, but they kept telling me they knew what they were doing. I still don't think it was the right move, even now.)

Anyway, eventually started seeing that as I went past two years, maybe I should just abandon my field as I was getting more and more out of practice and had even started practicing on my skills less (I had done that for about the first 1.5 years after graduation, but, after that and no hires, started to lose the motivation to keep practicing and cut back till now it's practically zero practice after the 2.5 year mark.)

I honestly think, as I do have a creative talent, I should go into fiction writing (which I HAVE practiced, LOTS) instead as self-employed (which would be a plus, as, though I can be chatty online, I"m NOT a people person and so customer service isn't for me). Probably wouldn't pay as much as "regular jobs", but, on the flip side, I won't have to deal with the mess of the market that the rest of the people put up with.

I might have done better in IT had I had some internship or not been like at least 1 hour from an urban area in every direction (if not more than an hour in some directions). And if they didn't require all this experience to even get hired (where the heck am I supposed to get that from???).

Also, I have a Catch 22 situation. Right now, live with my parents and qualify for Medicaid. If I got a job that pays enough to get me to not qualify for Medicaid but not enough to move out of home as my medical bills would be too high, then that ruins the point of the job, so the "take any job" option doesn't quite work in my case.

I've tried job fairs, just emailing in resumes, using job boards, using Chamber of Commerce pages, newspapers, and am spending time on a state job thing (think that's my best bet, as I was told I get hiring preferences due to my disability. And we know the person responsible for that state job and said job is only down the street.)

At any rate, I think my best goal is to NOT aim for the regular full time employment, but to aim for a side job that can get by when my writing work isn't bringing in the dough, and which can get me out of home and off of Medicaid (no, I don't like being a burden to the system, and the Mediciad, bureaucracy is no fun, but it's better than nothing.)

Also, as I am limited due to not driving, the "just relocate" option isn't really that available either.

Also, I tend to not like bossy management or fear it. (I have had annoying experiences with an overly bossy and yelling mother that I still have to put up with and she even drives my dad and brother nuts too. I want to GET AWAY FROM that type of environment, not go into another one, so don't tell me off for wanting to avoid it It's already taken a toll on my sanity.)

PS, if I'm self-employed, I can always work on my own website with my IT skills.

In conclusion, I think my gap of from May 2013 to January 2016 of no job (and not for lack of trying as I've had at least 250 applications and few interviews to show for it) and none during college or high school is gonna be practically fatal to me. (That and my introverted personality and no drivers license.) Nobody around me is telling me this, but I think I can see the writing on the wall.

BTW, I'm not the best to work well with others as I've been banned, sometimes permanently, from forums for not getting along with a member or two and it getting out of hand or obsessing on a topic and driving people nuts. (I think I have OCD and, if I recall, my doctor even said I did when I had asked him if I did.)

I honestly relate so much to this post. I am 24 and have serious employment difficulties due to my history with mental illness, which has always made me a sort of social outcast. If you have resources, I think you should go for the goal of being self employed. That will take awhile but perhaps you could make some sort of small revenue stream in the same time it would take you to find a job. I do not think people like us are better off living up to our own expectations than someone else's -- try making a website, or writing a E-book...

Has your doctor told you that you cannot drive? Being in the country without a driver's license severely limits your options.

Lots of people like to write. Almost no one makes any money at it; fewer still make any real money. I suggest you think of something else.

You might want to see if a local small business or non profit would like you to help them out with some website design. Design your own site first to show them what you are capable of.

I agree that your degree is dated. Employers will want to know why you have not worked in the field in the 2.5 years since you graduated. Are your parents controlling? They told you to to drive. They told you not to get an internship.

Actually, it wasn't just a my parents that thought I shouldn't drive. With my disabilities, someone who worked for the state recommended I not drive till age 25. However, I'm now 26 but my Dad doesn't think I can handle it.

Earlier, I could get why as the insurance rates went up. The only other thing I can think of is that my Dad's brother died in a car accident and that he's extra nervous because I might get sidetracked due to my disability.

Truthfully, it seems like around age 23, even while in college, my meds stopped working as well (perhaps when we went from brand to generic, but that was the fault of the insurance companies) and it's never gotten better since. Some jobs that require a lot of focus are out of my ability.

As for controlling, my mother is. Yes. I had started working on my own sites and stuff to keep up my skills. But about 6 or so months ago, noticed that my degree was dying (plus the industry seemed to be under attack by H1B and I just started blaming the Indians for not having a job). As for the jobs, there's mostly service jobs, truck driving, and nursing around here. I doubt I'd even get through the door to a company to show them web sites I've designed. Unless I wanted to start my own design service.

The one thing I've got going for me right now is that I DON'T have any college loan debt and don't, at the moment, have any cost of living expenses.

I do have a job coach helping me to get a job, and hope that state job pans out. However, I don't think she's always being honest with me. For instance, she has told me that it's ok to apply for jobs that I might only get 3/5 of the requirements as they might be willing to train me if they cannot find anyone more qualified.

However, by reading these forums, it would seem that companies can be very picky and that training is viewed as a swear word by companies.

Besides writing, which I have practiced a lot and am getting better at it, (goodness, I'm the only one that probably listens to all the directors film commentaries and stuff like that, so I have studied successful writers like George Lucas and others and their plot elements they revealed so I can guess some things.)

My other strength, besides IT, which is weakening, is politics. Not running for office (wouldn't that be nice), but political movements. I've taken part, online, in Stop Common Core movements and even an effort to amend the US Constitution, among other things.

I think my personality makes it so that I could not handle a full time job working with others all day long. I don't work well with others but so many jobs want that.

I'm kinda wishing I could just give up on the job search. I've applied for stuff even during college, a few days right before I graduated, and also after. I started tracking in October of 2014. Here's all I've had since then:

Honestly, I think my job coach might be slightly incompetent too BTW. I think I was better off showing what skills I had. That way they'd know if I was more relevant or not. Right now, she and her assistant had it changed so that it only shows my degrees. I have a feeling I'm just being rejected as my degrees alone aren't showing enough to be a good fit. I think she was pulling me down to try and get me a lower level when I could have gone higher. (I think I was getting more calls before when I had my resume the other way. However, that could also be that it was somewhat closer to graduation in those cases, so maybe time is a factor too.)

Also, another downside is that, while I don't drive, my Dad is gone all day and my Mom, unless I have an appointment like with my job coach or whatnot, often will stay in bed till 2 PM (not totally her fault as she has some illness, but it's annoying still as she doesn't have to stay up on her phone till 3 or 4 am every night.)

Also, my mother can sometimes be verbally abusive. Thus, I am wary of jobs with abusive people at work as I desperately want to get AWAY from that.

I also prefer quieter work environments. The more and more I look, the more and more it seems that the office job type environment is NOT for me. And all the IT jobs seem to be in Chicago.

I don't have the funds to move out of the area on my own either. Also, did offer to help my church with a website design, but doubt that'll work, as they already have a guy with a Masters in Computer Science doing it and I only have a Bachelors, so he's probably better than me.

Maybe the formatting of the second one wasn't as good, but I think the skills listed was a plus over the first one.

I have a feeling that the no work history (did have a paper route in middle school, but that's about it) plus the 2.5+ year unemployment since graduation is near fatal either way. Honestly, at this point, I think my lifetime earnings have been so damaged by the gap that, in the long run, I'd make more in the future gong the self-employed route.

All I can see is dead end, low paying jobs in my future if I go the employment route.

Trust me, college counselors don't know the first thing about the real world. I've had first hand experience with how delusional they are.

Regarding your resume, the 2nd one is much much better. I don't know why your college counselors told you to bury your skills at the very end.

I work for a large engineering firm as an engineer. I get a lot of resumes from the recent grads and the ones that I like I would forward to my boss. And if he also likes them, then he'll instruct HR to go forward with bringing them in for interview.

The last time I forwarded a resume of a recent college graduate, she ended up in my office getting trained by me 3 weeks after I first received her resume.

What caught my eyes about her resume? All the others had the same format as the one that your college counselors told you make your resume. Why do I have to read through a sea of words before I can get to see what kind of skills do you have? If you've created an app, I want to see it right away. In fact, if I were you, I'd expand on that app that you created. Like what kind of coding procedures you used, what you learned from it, what makes you proud of it, what usefulness does it present to the user, etc.?

Keep this in mind. A resume AIN'T NO job history. A resume is meant to tell the prospective employer as much as you can about yourself, your skills, and what you can contribute to the company. And again, don't make me go on a scavenger hunt to find what kind of skills you have. Make it obvious to me.

I would do it in the following order.

(1) Education, degree, GPA, etc.
(2) Career objectives.
(3) Skills - expand on this and be specific. I want to see at least half a page on this. In fact, when I look at resumes, I spend most of my time reading this section.
(4) Experiences and job history.
(5) References (I recommend you put "available upon request").

You do not have to keep your resume to 1 page. If you need to add a 2nd page, then go for it. For example, the entire 1st page on my resume gives a detail description of my skills, certifications, specialties, and reputation in my industry. And trust me, I have a lot to say about all the above. I also don't make it a wall of words. They are bullet points divided up into categories. My experiences and job history start on the 2nd page.

Keep in mind that while you are aiming to be as specific as possible with your skillsets, you also don't want to put on a wall of words for people to scavenger hunt through. Try to find an equilibrium where you can communicate your skills and experiences and still not hit people with too many words.

I wish you the best of luck.

Added by edit.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention. Don't lie or exaggerate your skills and experiences. I can sniff out a fake from a mile away.

Edit again.

I couldn't help but notice this bit from an earlier post of yours. You will find that if you have the skills or the intelligence to adapt quickly, you'd be surprised to find how accommodating employers are.

I'll give you a personal example. The job description listed for the position that I am in said at least 7 years experience in management. At the time that I gave them my updated resume for this position, I had less than 2 years. I got offered the job exactly 1 week after I gave them the resume.

Try to see the job descriptions and requirements as a guide. Guides aren't written in stone. They are meant to paint an image of what the employer wants.
