I applied for a position at a plant that will not be online until late 2017. I emailed a recruiter directly over some obvious concerns I had with their online application software. He politely responded and would like to schedule a phone interview with me. He asked my availability.

It is an engineering position and technical material will certainly be discussed. I am currently employed and do not want the interview to take place at work. Is it reasonable to ask the recruiter for a time about a week out? I would like to take schedule a half day and perform the interview in my home, without distraction.

Sure, I think it's reasonable.

I mean 2017...doesn't sound like they're in a huge rush eh? Little joke there but it's fine.

Yes, in fact you can even tell him that's the very reason why you want to schedule it out a week, to avoid having to do it somewhere at work. Most HR folks are very understanding and accommodating.

Thanks for the replies. The recruiter said that he would be out of town all next week and asked if I had availability this week. I gave him a time for tomorrow afternoon, reluctantly. I did not express my concern, maybe my concession will score some points, even if by a negligible amount.
