And if one actually has a wild and interesting life, why would they advertise that on FB KNOWING that employers check it? Everybody and their grandmother knows by now that employers look at FB. Anybody with half a brain will keep their crazy life out of FB.

I have an active LinkedIn that I use. As far as Facebook, I don't even use anything close to my real name, and if you didn't get a communication from me, no way you'd find it unless you knew high school classmates, family, etc.

I use my real name, but I'm still safe because I don't say which crocodile named Albert I am. I could be Albert Roosevelt, the crocodile who runs the ice cream shop in Tampa, I could be Albert Fleischman, the crocodile who drives a school bus in Omaha, I could be Albert Engebretson, the crocodile who operates a beauty salon in Vancouver, I could even be Albert Pavarotti, the crocodile who used to be a nuclear physicist at Los Alamos National Laboratories but left science behind to join the ministry and become an Episcopalian priest. I could be any one of a million crocodiles who are named Albert, and nobody would ever know the difference.

I am a genius, I tell you. A genius!

I don't do social media. I should probably start a linkdin account at some point. It hasn't stopped me from getting a job yet, but I'm also not in a tech field. I would imagine if you're connected with tech, not having a digital footprint would be like the kiss of death.

Some people automatically think if you don't have a FB, linkdin etc... you must have something to hide, no hire for you.

It is nuts just how much hiring people now just make up stuff based on something they really have no clue about.

True. I just remind myself that when an employer assumes I have no social network since they are unable to find my FB profile, it's not my fault. I just blame them because they don't know what to look for.

I have heard that, and that's a frustrating thought. I just have no interest or time to keep up with others on social media. If they google my name, a number of things *will* pop up, including publications I've written, actual media (articles, TV interviews), and listings in my formers jobs (I've worked for the government, so you can still access online directories that include my name). Hopefully that's enough to indicate I'm not hiding anything
